Scotiabank Dance Centre
Located at the corner of Granville and Davie, the Dance Centre runs programs to support the dance professional, presents performances to the public, and has been a hub for dance activity in Vancouver since 2001. I vividly remember going to a performance at the Dance Centre when it opened and it remains an important part of my dance life. The building houses a range of beautiful studios available for rent including a studio theatre which seats 154. Rehearsals, classes, workshops, shows and events are held here by all kinds of folks involved in dance. www.thedancecentre.ca
Vancouver Academy of Dance
Quite honestly, I’ve never known anything about the Vancouver Academy of Dance until today. Better late than never! The website tells me that VAD is a dance school with two locations in Richmond and Vancouver and is at this point in time“celebrating 15 years of Dance Excellence”. The school teaches styles from ballet to breakdance and the TranscenDance Company, affiliated with the school, presents a repertoire of jazz, tap and hip hop based work. Also affiliated with the school is the Strathcona Chinese Dance Company, founded in 1973. Very cool. www.vancouverdance.com
Harbour Dance Centre
If you’re just tuning in to the dance scene, or have a passing acquaintance with it, chances are that you have still heard of Harbour Dance. Their website is pretty all up in the social media stuff (according to someone inept at such things like myself) which I find is rare when it comes to dance. Located on Granville Street next to Tom Lee Music, Harbour Dance runs every class you are looking for. Drop ins galore, but also workshops that progress so you get more bang for your buck. Harbour Dance also sponsors several pre-professional and professional troupes that perform throughout the Lower Mainland.
