We featured Farida Lalji in the first issue of CoCo & Rico Magazine and watched as she showed off her latest collection at Vancouver Fashion Week Saturday. We catch up with her here to discuss her designs and the event.
You showed at Vancouver Fashion Week on Saturday. What was the inspiration behind your collection?
FL: The inspiration behind my collection was my birthplace of Africa and the fond memories I grew up with there. Africa is unique in terms of the pureness of nature and the accessibility to wildlife. I feel very privileged to have grown up there.
Is there a message you want to send through your clothes?
FL: Through my clothing, I try to communicate respect for the female figure, and appreciation for the female form. Indian-inspired clothing is typically flowy, sensual and very ornate. I try to combine these traditional elements with the needs of the modern woman.
How would you describe your experience as a designer at fashion week?
FL: I feel very privileged to have been selected to showcase my work at Vancouver Fashion Week. It is incredible to be able to work with, and get to know, so many talented individuals.
Where do you see your brand going?
FL: I would like my brand to stay true to the traditional elements of Indian couture, which have enabled me to fulfil my clients’ needs. I would also like to grow my brand and create clothing which is more accessible and practical for the modern, career-minded woman.
Who is the one woman you would love to dress and why?
FL: I would love to have the opportunity to dress the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. She has an exquisite sense of style and an incredible manner about her. She is every fashion designer’s dream.
